A dishwasher door gasket is the thin rubber strip that serves as a seal for your dishwasher, preventing leaks and spillage. With time, these gaskets harden, crack, and get damaged. If you find a puddle of water next to your dishwasher door, it is probably time to replace your gasket. However, you should also check the drain hose and the spray arm, before replacing your gasket. Here’s how you can remove your old dishwasher door gasket and replace it with a new one.
Step 1 – Turn the Machine Off
Since you will be working with an electrical appliance, it is important that you turn the machine off before beginning any task. In fact, it is even better if you completely disconnect the power outlet from the socket to avoid any unfortunate accident.
Step 2 – Remove the Door or Bottom Rack
Depending on the manufacturer, the design of your dishwasher will differ. For some, in order to access the gasket, you will need to remove the bottom rack. For others, you might have to remove the front door. Both doors and bottom racks can be easily removed. They are mostly attached with screws or with hooks. If it is attached with screws, use a screwdriver to detach the door or bottom rack. If it is secured with hook, simply raise and pull out the front door or bottom rack. Use the manual to determine how you can reach your gasket and how to remove the door/bottom rack. In some models, you may not need to remove anything, so read through your manual carefully.
Step 3 – Remove the Gasket
There many different ways in which you can remove the gasket. Since the gasket is a simple rubber strip that is fitted into a groove, sometimes using clips, all you need to do is pull the gasket out from the recess. For this, you can use your hands, adjustable pliers, or a screwdriver. If your gasket is attached with screw or clips, use the screwdriver to remove these as you go along. The most preferred tool for pulling out a gasket is a pair of curved needle nose pliers.
Step 4 – Replace the Gasket
If you are removing your old gasket, you will definitely need to replace it with a new one; otherwise, you will end up with a pool in your kitchen. To do this, simply buy a replacement door gasket from a hardware store or from the appliance manufacturer. Then, while you are removing your old gasket, let the new one soak in some warm, soapy water. This will help to soften it, making it easier to push it into the groove at the time of installation. Always begin installing the new gasket from the bottom, using your hands to push it into the groove. If you have screw/clips, use the same old ones to secure the gasket in the recess.
