How to Remove a Mustard Stain from Carpet

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/4 teaspoon of a mild liquid dish detergent
  • Clean, white towels or rags
  • Carpet Cleaner
  • Vacuum
  • A scooping tool such as a spatula

It can be difficult to completely remove a mustard stain in a carpet. However, if you follow the steps outlined below and act quickly, you can easily remove a the mustard before it leaves a permanent stain.

Step 1: Scoop

The first step is to remove any puddled mustard. If only a small drop or two has hit the carpet, you can skip this step.

Step 2: Blot

Working from the edge of the stain towards the middle, blot as much of the mustard out of the carpet with a clean towel and water as you can.

Step 3: Soak and Blot

Dampen a clean towel or rag with the soapy water solution, and gently but firmly blot at the stain, rinsing the towel often. Continue until no more mustard visibly comes out on the towel.

Step 4: Deep Clean

Using the recommended cleaning agent, thoroughly steam clean or shampoo the affected area. Once the stain is gone, place a clean towel over the wet area and set something on it for weight. Leave this overnight.

Step 5: Vacuum

Once the area is dry, go over it a couple of times with your vacuum to return the nap to its normal state.
