How to Remove a Mustard Stain from Clothing

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Dull knife or spatula
  • vinegar
  • Kitchen towel or highly absorbent paper
  • Liquid detergent
  • Water
  • Washable cloth

It can be difficult to remove a mustard stain in your clothes, especially as your efforts only seem to spread the stain and push it further into the fabric. Rather than ruin your shirt or pants, follow the below steps on how to remove a mustard stain fast and effectively without too much effort.

Step 1 – Take Immediate Action

When you are at home and the mustard spilled on your favorite washable clothing, immediately remove the rest of the mustard sticking on your clothing with a dull knife or plastic or rubber spatula. You will not want to damage your clothing further by using a sharp knife. Removing the excess mustard will also prevent the mustard from spreading to other areas of the clothing.

If you are just at home, you can quickly remove your shirt or shorts so that you can take action fast. However, if you are in a public area, you can always improvise, such as using the edge of a paper or cardboard to remove the excess mustard from the clothing, and you need not remove your shirt then.

Step 2 – Dot Out The Vinegar

Put a few drops of vinegar on the mustard stain with the shirt inside out to keep the stain from spreading fast. On the other side of the clothing, put an absorbent pad or paper to absorb the vinegar. Drop vinegar until the paper is soaked. Repeat the same process until you can see that the stain is slowly detaching from the clothing.

If in a public place, you can ask for a teaspoonful of vinegar from a nearby restaurant to help treat the stain.

Step 3 – Wash Normally

Finally, when the stain is no longer or very slightly visible, you can wash it with a liquid detergent and water. Scrub it with your hands, and then you will notice that there is no more stain. If ever the stain is still present, add a few more vinegar drops and wash again with detergent and water. After washing, rinse the clothing and hang to dry under the sun or use your dryer at home.
