How to Remove a Trojan Horse Virus

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Virus Removal Software
  • Internet Access

A Trojan horse virus is usually disguised as a real piece of software that users are deceived into loading onto their computer. The virus can allow hackers remote access to the computer, causing hardware and software damage and to steal information such as bank and credit card details. Most anti-virus software will remove a Trojan horse virus, however it is possible to remove the virus manually. This guide will tell you how to remove a Trojan horse virus from your Windows based computer.

Step 1 - Disable the System Restore

First you need to disable the system restore from your computer. You can find the System Restore tab by clicking on Properties from My Computer. When you have accessed the System Restore tab, click Disable > Apply > Yes > Ok.

Step 2 – Your Computer Anti-virus Software

You should then make sure that you have installed up to date and paid for virus removal software such as Spybot and Ad-aware. If you haven’t got this software, you should now look to install it together with any add-ons that are provided that are specifically targeted at the Trojan viruses.

Step 3 – Using Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by restarting the computer. You can do this by shutting down your computer from the Start Menu and clicking Restart. When your computer is beginning the restarting process, press the F8 key. This will bring up the Windows Advanced Options Menu. From this menu select the Safe Mode option and press enter. Your computer will continue to load in Safe Mode.

Step 4 – Run Your Virus Software

Run your virus removal software in Safe Mode together with any add-ons for the software you have installed. This should get rid of any Trojan Horse virus you may have. At this stage you should also empty all cookies that have been created and your internet cache. You can do this by clicking on Tools from the internet toolbar and Internet Options. From here click on Delete Cookies. You will then be prompted to delete these temporary internet files. You should then click on Delete Files from the same menu to empty the temporary files cache.

Step 5 – Reboot Your Computer in Normal Mode

Restart your computer in Normal Mode. To do this shut down your computer from the start menu and click on restart. Your computer should enter Normal Mode automatically. When the system has rebooted, re-run your virus removal software and you should hopefully get a clean report.

Step 6 - Enable the System Restore

Your final step should be to enable the System Restore. Again go to the System Restore tab by clicking on Properties from My Computer. When you have accessed the System Restore tab, click Enable > Apply > Yes > Ok. In future you should make sure that you have good anti-virus software and also an active firewall installed on your computer to ensure that your computer is not inflicted with any viruses.
