by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • White wine vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Mild liquid soap
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Empty spray bottle
  • Sponge
  • Paper towels
  • Scrub brush
  • Washcloth

If your cat has recently soiled its bed, you may be curious about how to remove urine stains from cat bedding. If you are, it may interest you to learn that these stains can be easily removed with the aid of a few common household items.

Step 1 - Apply Your Baking Soda

If you come across a cat bedding urine stain while the stain is still wet, the bedding can typically be cleaned with nothing more than baking soda. With the aid of a sponge, paper towel or washcloth, vigorously apply baking soda to the stained area. This will help soak up the urine. Once you notice that the baking soda is beginning to turn yellow, apply a fresh layer. Repeat this process until the baking soda no longer changes color. In order to purge any remaining germs and get rid of the lingering odor, leave your final layer of baking soda on the cat bedding for several hours before proceeding to vacuum it up. If the urine stain is too dry for this method to be effective, proceed with the next step.

Step 2 - Apply Your Vinegar-Based Cleaning Solution

If baking soda proves ineffective in purging your cat bedding of urine stains, you may have luck with a time tested homemade cleaning solution. Inside of an empty spray bottle, mix 2 parts warm water with 1 part white wine vinegar. After your cleaning solution has taken form, vigorously spray it onto any urine-stained areas of your cat bedding. Once the solution has had several minutes to set in, proceed to give it a thorough scrubbing with the aid of a sponge, scrub brush or washcloth. Keep in mind that you may have to repeat this process several times before the urine stains are successfully purged. After scrubbing away the urine stains, use a dampened sponge, washcloth or paper towel to wipe away any remaining traces of your cleaning solution.

Step 3 - Apply Your Hydrogen Peroxide-Based Cleaning Solution

If your vinegar-based cleaning solution failed to do the trick, there's another homemade cleaning solution that can stand up to the most stubborn urine stains. Within an empty spray bottle, combine 2 tbs of baking soda with 15 oz of hydrogen peroxide and two small squirts of a mild liquid soap. Next, apply it to any stained areas of your cat bedding and allow it to sit for 3 to 5 minutes before using a sponge, washcloth or scrub brush to scrub the stain(s). As was the case with the vinegar-based solution, you may need to repeat this process several times before seeing any substantial results. Once the stains are gone, use a dampened sponge, washcloth or paper towel to get rid of any remaining cleaning solution. This solution doesn't keep very well, so take care to dispose of it once it's served its purpose.

Step 4 - Keep Your Cat's Litter Box Clean

By nature, cats are notorious neat freaks. Unless your cat is sick, urinating on its bedding is usually the animal's way of telling you that its litter box needs to be cleaned. So, if you want to avoid cat bedding urine stains altogether, make a point of cleaning your cat's litter box on a consistent basis.
