How to Repair a Globe Valve that Leaks

A globe valve can be rotated 360 degrees to open or close off a pipe. The packing washer is usually the main source of leaks. Follow the steps below to repair a leaking globe valve.

Step 1: Cut Off Water Supply

Use the shut off valve to cut off the water to the valve. Open the valve to release pressure.

Step 2: Remove the Globe Valve

Use the adjustable pipe wrench to undo the bolts that hold the body of the globe valve into its upper covering, called a bonnet. There should be at least 2 bolts, more if the globe valve unit is large. Use the screwdriver to pry the valve from the bonnet.

Step 3: Examine and Replace the Packing Material

Check the packing washer for corrosion or loose fit. If it is damaged, replace it with a new washer. If it is intact, check the gasket and the seat of the globe valve for leakage problems.

Step 4: Reassemble the Globe Valve

Fit the new packing washer into the valve, and reattach the globe valve to the bonnet, securing all the bolts snugly.

Step 5: Restore Water Supply

Turn the water back on again and clear air from the pipes. Test the valve for leakage.
