How to Repair a Power Window Regulator

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • 2 Screwdrivers (flat head and Phillips head screwdriver)
  • Socket wrench with various sized sockets
  • Torx bits to remove window motor
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Teflon spray or grease
  • Heat gun
  • Chisel
  • Sandpaper
  • Epoxy

Due to constant use, a power window regulator is subject to a lot of wear and tear and will need repair if it stops functioning correctly. Generally, any repairs for window mechanisms can be quite costly, but with a little mechanical knowledge, repairing a power window regulator yourself can be a fairly simple process which you can complete in 1 or 2 hours.

Step 1. Taking the Door Panel Off

Unscrew all the visible screws on the panel. Take off all the window control switches and disconnect all electrical connections.

Once you have removed all the screws, remove the clips that hold the panel down with the panel trim remover tool. Remove all the clips around the panel’s edges, starting at the bottom and working your way up.

Remove the panel off by lifting it up and then pulling it towards you.

Step 2. Removing the Water Shield

With the panel off, you will be able to see the plastic water shield. Go around the edge of the water shield with the removal tool and peel the shield away. Be careful not to tear the water shield, as it needs to go back on to keep moisture out.

With the shield removed, you will see the window resting in the clamps. Mark the location of the glass to ensure that you put it back in the right place once you are done.

Step 3. Taking the Window Out

Loosen the clamps holding the window with the socket wrench until the window can be moved. Be sure not to loosen them all the way, as they will slip into the door cavity.

Using your hands, push the bottom part of the window up, sliding the glass upwards and through the top of the door.

Step 4. Removing the Power Window Regulator

With the glass removed, you will be able to see the power window regulator clearly. First, disconnect the wiring from the motor, and then remove the three bolts, which will loosen the motor.

Next, remove the two regulator nuts at the bottom, which will free the motor. Be sure to mark the exact location of the bracket before removing the motor.

Remove the power window regulator through the opening in the door.

Step 5. Repairing the Power Window Regulator

Position the regulator on a work surface.

Examine the master pulley. Check that the grooves and ridges are smooth and symmetrical. If they are not, repair as follows:

Use a heat gun to soften the plastic. Do not burn the plastic, but when it is soft enough, use a chisel to remove any big pieces of plastic. Afterwards, use a piece of sandpaper to smooth the plastic down.

Check that there are no small chips in the slide. If it is chipped, use 60 second epoxy to fill in the chips, Leave to dry for at least three hours.
