How To Repair A Refrigerator Door

The door on a refrigerator is an important component to the over all functionality of the refrigerator. A simple refrigerator door repair can potentially save hundreds of dollars in energy every year.

Check the Hinges
A misaligned door hinge can release cold air from inside the refrigerator, causing it to run less efficiently. If the door doesn’t shut evenly it could be a problem with a hinge. The easiest repair for this is to simply tighten the screws that hold the hinges. If this doesn’t solve the problem try to see if the hinges are level. You may need to replace the hinges all together.

The Door Gasket

The rubber piece that circles the entire door serves a purpose more than just helping the door close quietly. It should form a seal that maintains the temperature inside the refrigerator. If the gasket is cracked or warped you will need to replace this. Find the model number for your refrigerator and you can find the right gasket. Some gaskets are simply put on with adhesives, others require clamps or screws.

The Light
If you have a faulty door switch, the light may stay on in your refrigerator. This wastes valuable energy. To check this simply find the switch and press on it with the door open. Sometimes a thorough cleaning of the switch can fix the problem.

By maintaining your refrigerator door and making the necessary repairs you can save yourself a lot of money in lost energy costs.
