How to Repair a Sliding Glass Door Latch

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • New sliding glass door handle
  • WD-40 or petroleum-based oil
  • Graphite pen
  • Lubricant

Fixing a sliding glass door latch is quick and easy if you have a Philips screwdriver and the replacement door latch ready. Sliding glass door latches are found in any local hardware store or home center. Finding the right kind may be very challenging, so it’s better to take your broken latch to the store with you so you can find a replacement that is compatible with your sliding door. Sliding door latches comes in different designs and styles, so be sure to purchase one that can be used on your door type.

Step 1 – Check the Latch

Check if the latch is already broken or if it can still be repaired. Normally, a glass sliding door will have a standard pin tumbler latch that can be found in any regular door. The debris present inside the hardware may be causing the inability to turn the latch, a common problem of sliding door latches. In this case, insert the graphite pen into the lock and squeeze some lubricating substance into the latch. Sometimes the sliding door may have a latch that works by sliding a small notch up and down. These types of latches also experience the same symptoms as the standard glass door locks. Try applying lubricant, such as a petroleum-based oil or WD-40 in the area to see if that works.

Step 2 – Replace the Door Latch

If lubricating the latch doesn’t fix the problem, it’s time to replace the door latch. Remove the screws attaching the broken sliding glass door latch to the door by using the screwdriver. Visit your local hardware store and present to them your broken door latch as reference for your purchasing requirement. Having the broken door latch with you at the time of purchase will save you from going back and forth from the store when you accidentally purchase an incompatible lock.

Step 3 – Check the Parts of the Latch

Open the packaging of the door latch and be familiar with all the parts and pieces. Different models and styles of glass door latches vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model, so it’s better to familiarize yourself with what you purchased.

Step 4 – Install the Locking Cylinder

You must install the locking cylinder into the main door frame. Test the locking cylinder by sliding the key into the cylinder and working the lock to make sure it’s working.

Step 5 – Position the Locking Side of the Latch

Position the exterior or locking side of the door latch into the door. Position the interior side of the door lock frame into the door. Position the door handle over the screw holes on the interior side of the door frame and put in the screws. Hand-tighten the screws to put the door handle in place. Once it is hand tightened, use a Philips head screwdriver to tighten it more.

Step 6 – Close the Sliding Door

Close the sliding door and engage the door lock. Test if the door latches engage when it is locked. Open the door and test the locking mechanism to ensure that the locking arm moves correctly.
