How to Repair and Replace a Storm Door Hinge Rail

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screw driver
  • New hinge rail
  • Silicone lubricating spray
  • 3-in-1 oil (optional)
  • Saw horse

If your storm door is closing improperly or incompletely you may need to repair or replace your storm door hinge rail.

Step 1 - Detach Door Hardware from Door Jamb

With your screw driver unscrew and detach the end of the door closer mechanism that is attached to the door jamb. Also you will need to unhook or unscrew one end of the door stopper chain attached to the top of the door.

Step 2 - Remove Storm Door

With your storm door in the open position unscrew the door hinges from the storm door and remove door and hinge rail. Lay your storm door horizontally on your saw horse to work on it.

Step 3 - Replace Storm Door Hinge

Now that you have removed your storm door hinge rail, put the new one in place. Be sure to line the screw holes up exactly like the old door. Be careful not to over tighten screws in hinge rail system.

Step 4 - Rehang Storm Door

Carefully realign the storm door hinges and hinge rail with the screw holes in the door jamb and replace screws being careful not to over tighten. It is advisable to add a small amount of silicone lubricating spray to door hinges and hinge rail. If you do not have a silicone base lubricating spray, a 3-in-1 oil spray will work just as well.

Step 5 - Troubleshooting

If after you have followed these steps your door squeaks or closes improperly the problem is most likely that your hinge screws are too tight. Loosen all hinge screws by 1/4 of a turn to relieve the tension on your storm door hinge rail.
