How to Repair Electrical Conduit Fittings
Electrical conduit fittings are devices that are utilized to connect an electrical source to another source or outlet. They appear as water pipes, but are made of metal and steel materials. They are mainly used to give protection to conductors from accidental and chemical damage, humidity and dampness.
The materials that are used in making electrical conduit fittings are made of light-duty metal. They differ from steel conduits, which are made from heavy metal. Repairing electrical conduit fittings is fairly easy and can be done in a single day. To be certain that you are repairing the electrical conduits the right way, here are the steps involved:
Materials
The following materials are needed to repair electrical conduits:
- Dies
- Electrical conduit pipe
- Pipe cutter
- Pliers
- Threader tool
- Wrench
- Vice
Steps in Repairing Electrical Conduits
- Trimming the pipe- To do this, you just have to make sure that the internal diameter of the pipe is the same as the conduits that are already being used. If there are only few pieces of the pipe that have to be replaced, you will only need one to two pieces of pipe. Then, cut the pipe according to its appropriate length. To do this, place the pipe on a vice horizontally. Then, using the pipe cutter, saw through the end of the pipe. Do not forget to turn the handle of the cutter round ¼ turn every full pass of the electrical conduit.
- Removing the Old Pipe- Turn of your electricity power before touching the conduits. Use pliers to remove the supports that are holding the conduit in its position. After that, use a wrench to lift the conduit. Remove the old electrical conduits and place them on the ground until you remove all the electrical conduits that you need.
- Fitting the New Electrical Conduit- Thread the conduits by utilizing a threading device or a die. While the pipe is in the vice, start pressing the dies into the threading device. Make sure to place the threading tool against the other end of the pipe. Use your hands to push dies into the pipe. Do this on all other conduits that you need to add to the track. Once finished, put your pipe in a resting position and then line it up with the other remaining fitting. Afterwards, connect the two by utilizing a screw fitting device. Continue doing this until you have finished all the pieces.
- Finishing- After laying the pipe track, add the supports of the conduits onto the floor or wall were the conduits are located. Install them around three feet away from the electricity box. Be certain that the conduits are held tightly by its supports. In addition, make sure that all the pipes are fitted together in the correct manner. After that, turn on the electricity box. Test to see if it is working, and then cover the electrical conduits.
