How to Repair Solid Surface Bathroom Countertops

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Solid surface adhesive
  • Putty knife
  • Masking tape
  • Sealer
  • Razor blade
  • Soft cloth

Solid surface bathroom countertops are a great addition. They are durable and they come in a variety of materials and colors. These types of countertops are also very easy to clean. You do not need to worry about spilling water and allowing the water to sit on the countertop for a period of time because it will not cause the countertop to warp as the surface is fairly water resistant. On the flip side, the solid surface countertop is also susceptible to scratching and to discoloration from heat. Last, be prepared to spend a little extra money on the purchase of this type of countertop, as compared to a simple vinyl countertop. Below are several steps to follow on repairing your solid surface countertop.

Step 1 - Clean the Counter Top

Take a little solid surface cleaner and a soft cloth and clean the top of the bathroom countertop. Make sure you remove any items that may be sitting on the countertop and put them away for safe keeping. Dry the surface of the countertop completely with a lint free towel.

Step 2 - Mark the Area

On the chipped or scratch area, mark it off with a couple layers of masking tape. Extend the masking tape at least 1 inch outside the scratched surface in order to protect the surrounding area.

Step 3 - Purchase Adhesive

Take a trip to the local home improvement store and purchase a solid surface adhesive. Find an adhesive that is made with a 2 part epoxy. If you have a standard color solid surface you may be able to find an adhesive that is the same color as your solid surface countertop

Step 4 - Apply the Adhesive

Follow the directions supplied by the manufacturer of the adhesive and apply it to the scratch using a putty knife. Work the adhesive into the scratch or crack. Wipe away any excess adhesive with a razor blade. Be sure not to scratch the surface again and work gently.

Step 5 - Allow to Dry

Allow the adhesive to dry completely in place. Check with the directions, but it is usually best to give the adhesive at least 24 hours drying time.

Step 6 - Apply a Sealer

Purchase a solid surface countertop sealer at your local home improvement store and apply it to the countertop by following the directions that came with the product. The sealer will help to maintain the brilliance of the countertop and it will help to resist additional scratching and chipping that may occur.

Step 7 - Wipe Clean

Wipe the countertop clean with a mild soap and water or with a solid surface cleaner after the sealer has been allowed to dry for another 24 hours.

Step 8 - Put Things Back

Take out your countertop items and trinkets and place them back on your newly repaired solid surface bathroom countertops.
