what you'll need
- Ladder
- New light Fixture
- Slotted Screwdriver
- Wire Nuts
- Paper diagram of wiring
You can now pass on the second stage in replacing a ceiling light fixture. In Part 1 of this article you will find the instructions needed to remove and disconnect the old light fixture and thus in this article you shall find the instructions to put in place the replacement fixture.
Step 1 – General Preparation
The first things you need are the paper diagram with how your old fixture was connected to the house wiring and the instructions to attach the new light fixture to your ceiling box. Attachment fittings may be provided with your new fixture, so take them up the ladder with you.
Step 2 – Preparation Before Connecting
At this point you should enlist a helping hand to hold the light fixture for you while you are connecting it to the house wiring. You should reconnect the new fixtures approximately in the same way your old fixture was connected.
Step 3 – Attaching the Wiring
Once you have lifted the fixture in place you should splice the white and gray wires (incoming and neutral wires) and then attach them together by twisting. Once you have attached them you can secure each wire with a wire nut. Again, splice and attach the black or red wires (also known as hot wires) and secure them with a nut. Finally splice, attach and secure the ground wire (green).
Step 4 – Testing the Light
Before pushing all the wiring into the electrical box and fastening the light fixture to the ceiling you should always test the light to see if it actually works. So get off the ladder and turn the power on from the circuit breaker or fuse box and turn the light on from the switch so that you can make sure all connections work. For this step you will definitely need a helper to either hold the fixture for you or the switch the power and light on. Once you have checked the lighting works you can turn off the power and light once again to proceed to the final step.
Step 5 – Finishing Off
At this point, your light should be in working order and you can now push and tuck all wirings into the electrical box. Then fasten the light fixture with the fasteners provided when purchased.
You now have a new ceiling light fixture adorning the room. This is the easiest way to replace a light fixture. However, always remember to enlist a helping hand to facilitate things and to safeguard your well being by switching off any power before working
