How to Replace a Dishwasher Door Gasket

by DoItYourself Staff

The door gasket on your dishwasher ensures a tight seal when the dishwasher is being used. This prevents water from escaping, but with regular use the gasket may become damaged by shrinking, tearing, or cracking, so that it no longer provides a good seal when the dishwasher is in use.

Replacing the Dishwasher Gasket

Before you replace the dishwasher door gasket, you will need to soak the new one overnight in water, in order to make it soft and pliable. This will be vital to prevent damage when you are replacing the gasket.

On the following day, take out the old gasket by gently pulling it away from the door. There should now be a small recess in the dishwasher door.

Take the new gasket from the water, and, starting on the lower right side of the dishwasher door, gently push the gasket into the dishwasher door recess.

Once the gasket is in the bottom right, pull the gasket over, and place in the lower left side of the dishwasher door. Work in the gasket, until all of it is in the dishwasher door recess.

Ensure that the dishwasher door will close tightly: place some dirty crockery on the shelves, begin the dishwasher, and check that the new gasket is not leaking.
