How to Replace a DLP Projector Lamp
what you'll need
- Cross-head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Pliers
- Replacement bulb
Rather than spending more money than you need to by purchasing a whole unit, you should just replace the bad bulb in your DLP projector lamp. It is really quite easy to do and can usually be done within 15 minutes or so. Regardless of the brand of DLP projector you own, the process is basically the same. You do not even need to be especially tech-savvy to do this. It is highly recommended that you do not purchase remanufactured lamps. They do cost a lot less and so you may be tempted, but they will not last long, and in long run, you will spend more trying to save than you will spend by purchasing a good one to begin with. Often a new DLP projector lamp will cost anywhere from $120 to $150 (prices in 2010), but if you do a search of the Internet, you can often find new ones at discounted prices. Do make sure to do your research and make your purchase from a reputable company, online or locally.
Step 1 – Remove Old Bulb
Begin by removing the screw on the side of the lamp. Remove the nut from the back of the post. Take off the ballast wires. Using the flat head screwdriver, remove the clamp that is holding the lamp in place. Now you should be able to remove the lamp. Be careful, as it is fragile. Think green and remember to recycle. Do not throw the old bulb into the trash. Check with your local recycling centers to find out the proper procedures in handling the recycling of your old DLP projector lamp.
Step 2 – Put in New Bulb
Carefully screw the side connector to the new DLP projector lamp. Be sure to handle it carefully, as the terminals are very delicate and will break easily. Next you will want to screw the clamp back on. This will hold the lamp in place. Then you can put the wires into place, put the nut back on and screw it all into place. On the bright side, you will not have to worry about getting the wires on the right sides. They are made to use alternating current (AC). This feature makes replacing the bulb much easier than many people think it will be.
Newer DLP bulbs will usually last for 6,000 to 7,000 hours. Depending on how much you use them and the type of lamp you own, this could be anywhere from 1 to 4 years. Some of the symptoms of a bad lamp include audio with no picture, a picture that has gotten dim after a few years of use, the lamp's failure to light up and blinking indicator lights. If you notice other symptoms, such as a blurry picture, spots on your screen, no audio, no blinking lights or a strange clicking sound, then your problem is probably not a bad bulb. Another part is probably malfunctioning.
