How to Replace a Double Light Switch
what you'll need
- Voltage tester
- Grounding wrist strap
- New double light switch
- Electrical tape
- Wire cutter
- Wire stripper
- Screwdriver
A double light switch is used to light two separate light sources from one area. The wiring in a double light switch is pretty much the same as a single light switch. There are some fundamental differences between wiring a single and a double light switch. Here's how to replace a double light switch, either because the original one is old or you want a new style.
Step 1 - Shut off the Power
Working with electricity is not something to take for granted. If you're not careful you can be seriously hurt. It doesn't matter if you're wiring something simple like a double light switch or as complicated as a junction box, as the seriousness is the same. Locate the main junction box that feeds the entire home. If you're lucky the panel will be marked and you can easily switch the power off to the area you're working in. If the box isn't properly labeled, turn the main power off for safety.
Step 2 - Access to the Double Light Switch
Use the screwdriver to remove the screws that are holding the double light switch plate in place. Before you start working on the switch, put the wrist strap on and connect the other end to the bare metal in the box. Use the circuit tester to make sure the current is actually turned off. Press the tester to each wire and each space between each wire. If the current is not present, you can continue.
Step 3 - Wire Identification
There are hot wires, neutral wires and a grounding wire. The hot wire is usually red, but can also be black. A wire that is bare, green or yellow (or green with a yellow stripe) is the grounding wire. The white wire is the neutral wire. In a double light switch setup, you will have multiple white wires and one red or black wire. The white wires go to the switches, so when you throw the left switch it will open the current through the lines and turn on the light that it goes to. Place a strip of electrical tape around the hot wire so that you can identify it later.
Step 4 - Connecting the Double Light Switch
Some setups will not have a grounding wire. If this is the case, cut off a piece of wire and totally strip off the insulation. Tie one end of the wire to the box and the other to the green screw on the double light switch. Cut and strip each of the wires from the wall box. Loosen the screws on the double light switch. If there are wires connected to the double light switch plate, cut and strip them. Mimic the wire connections on the old double light switch. Tighten the screws and use wire caps on the wires connected to the new double light switch. Replace the face plate and turn the power back on.
