How to Replace a Dryer Start Switch

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • A flathead screwdriver
  • A new start switch

If the start switch on your dryer does not work, it will be impossible for the components in your dryer to function as a unit. This will mean that you cannot dry any items until you get the start switch replaced. Replacing the dryer start switch isn't too challenging and it is a cost-effective alternative to calling out a technician to change the switch for you.

Step One - Cut Power

Cut power to the dryer by unplugging it from the electrical outlet it uses. Get behind the dryer and move it forwards a couple of feet. This will allow the control console to be easily accessed.

Step Two - Unscrew Console

Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the two screws which secure the control console at the top of the dryer. Once these have been removed, you should be able to gently pull the console back so it will extend outwards and rest on its own hinges. Be gentle to make sure the hinges do not break.

Step Three - Unscrew Top

Use the same screwdriver to unscrew the three holding screws which keep the top of the dryer fastened down. You should be able to see these screws directly beneath the point where you removed the control console screws. Once you have removed the three screws, push the top from the front. You should hear a click which will mean the front clips have loosened, allowing you to lift the top of the dryer away.

Step Four - Remove Start Switch

Open the front door of the dryer and you should see two small screws holding the start switch in place. Remove them and put them somewhere safe. Look in through the top and you should see wires which connect the start switch directly behind where you have just removed the two screws. Gently pull the wires away with your hands, holding onto the connectors while doing so. The wires will be connected to a tab hiding the start switch component. Reach in and remove the switch with your fingers once the wire connector has been removed. Be very careful not to tug too hard and damage any components.

Step Five - Install New Switch

Place the new switch into position through the top of the dryer. Gently press the wire connectors back into place. You should hear a small click which will mean the connector has fixed onto the new tabs. Hold the inside of the switch with one hand as you gently screw the screws back into place on the other side.

Step Six - Reassemble

Take the top of the dryer and slide it back into place until the holding clips click again. You should not be able to move the top around if it has clicked back on correctly. Put the three screws back into place to hold the panel. Gently lift the control console back over and secure it back into place with the other two screws. Push the dryer back against the wall and reconnect the power. Hit the start switch and the dryer should be working as good as new.
