A dryer thermal fuse is a safety feature on some dryers. It monitors the heat levels of your dryer and blows out when it determines the level of heat to be unsafe. If your dryer thermal fuse is blown, your dryer will no longer produce any heat. Replacing a dryer thermal fuse is a simple task if you follow these easy steps.
Step 1: Unplug and Move Dryer
Always unplug any electrical appliances before working on them to help prevent against electric shock. Once you make sure the dryer is unplugged, move it away from the wall so you have room to work.
Step 2: Turn Off Gas Valve
Make sure that no gas is venting from your dryer while you work by closing the gas valve on your dryer. Then unplug the gas line from the valve.
Step 3: Remove Rear Panel
Use a screwdriver or nut driver to remove the screws holding the rear panel to the dryer. Pull the panel away and set it aside. Place the screws somewhere safe so you don’t lose them.
Step 4: Locate Dryer Thermal Fuse
You should see a white plastic piece with wires connected to it. This will be your dryer thermal fuse.
Step 5: Remove Dryer Thermal Fuse
To remove the dryer thermal fuse, you will first need to disconnect the wires. Remember how the wires were attached so you can reconnect them to the new dryer thermal fuse later. Removal of the dryer thermal fuse will vary from dryer to dryer. Some snap into and out of place, while others may be secured with a screw or nut. Remove the dryer thermal fuse by referring to the instructions that came with your dryer.
Step 6: Clean Out Dryer Parts
If your dryer thermal fuse has blown, then it blew out for a reason. Before inserting the replacement dryer thermal fuse, you will want to do some basic cleanup maintenance on the dryer to help prevent it from happening again.
- Look for blockages and clog in areas such as the exhaust box and ductwork.
- Verify the condition of the blower wheel and make sure there are no problems with it.
- Clean out the inside of the dryer with a vacuum to clear out dust and other debris.
- Remove any lint in your dryer’s exhaust vent.
Step 7: Add New Dryer Thermal Fuse
Insert the dryer thermal fuse using the same method you used to remove it. Remember to reconnect the wires in the same way they were connected to the last one.
Step 8: Reconnect Rear Panel
Place the rear panel against the back of the dryer and secure it with screws.
Step 9: Reconnect Gas
Plug the gas line back into the dryer and turn on the gas valve.
Step 10: Move Dryer Back into Place
Once the dryer has been moved back into place, don’t forget to plug it back in. If after replacing your dryer thermal fuse you still have problems with your dryer, you may need to take it in to a service professional.
