How to Replace a Home Theater Projector Bulb

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Hex wrenches
  • Replacement bulb

With different lamp housings, replacing a home theater projector bulb seems like it may be a difficult job, but in reality, it is usually simple with just a screwdriver or hex wrench. Make sure you have the correct replacement bulb before you start. Many common bulb brands can be found in hardware stores, if in doubt, take your old bulb with you to the store to find the right one.

If your projector will not turn on, the picture flickers or is dim, or you receive a warning for a couple of minutes before starting the movie, it is time to replace the bulb. Sometimes you will hear unusual noises when you turn the projector on or while the movie is running. Do not disregard the warnings as a bulb that has gone some way past its rated time may explode. The usual rated use time is 2000 to 4000 hours. Check your manual for the rated time on your particular projector.

Checking the counter periodically will give you time to plan the buying and replacement of the bulb.

Step 1 – Switch Off the Projector

You must switch off the projector and allow it to cool down before you touch the bulb. Check the warranty to see if you can replace the bulb yourself without voiding it. Switch off the power and remove the plug from the wall socket.

Step 2 – Open the Bulb Housing Panel

If you cannot locate the bulb housing, check the manual for its position. There should be a small, metal panel on the bottom or back of the unit. Open the panel with a screwdriver.

Step 3 – Remove the Bulb

You will see the bulb sitting it’s housing. If there are thumb screws holding the bulb in, unscrew them, otherwise, the bulb should slide out, or it can easily be unscrewed. If the housing is dusty, use an aerosol air can to blow it out.

Step 4 – Replace the Bulb

Insert the new bulb after making sure it is identical to the broken one that you are replacing. Gently place it in the housing, making sure it is orientated in the same way as the old one. Replace any panels that you removed.

Step 5 – Power Up

Plug in the power and turn on. In some units, you will be able to reset the bulb hours meter back to zero, if not, you should write down the hours displayed so you know when to replace the one you have just inserted.

If you are still having problems with blurred images after replacing the bulb, there may be another problem. If this is the case, look to your manual for troubleshooting tips. In case you have trouble getting a bulb for your projector, you should buy a replacement one when you purchase your projector. Some home theater projectors come with a replacement bulb as standard.
