How to Replace a Low-Voltage Lighting Transformer

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Low voltage lighting transformer
  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Rag
  • Wires
  • Wire cutter
  • Wire crimper
  • Voltage meter (optional)

A low voltage lighting transformer is typically found in fluorescent lighting fixtures and they regulate electric to power the lighting tube. Once you remove the fluorescent light you'll see the low voltage lighting transformer on either side of the fixture. When these begin to go bad you will be able to hear buzzing or flicking coming from the light during operation. The low voltage lighting transformer is the most important part of the lighting fixture and this article will show you how to replace it.

Step 1 - Accessing the Low Voltage Lighting Transformer

Before you begin working with the light, always make sure you turn it off first. If you want to be extra safe then turn the power off at the circuit breaker. Once the light is shut off you can then carefully remove the fluorescent light from the fixture. Place the lighting tube on a flat surface and wipe it off with a rag. The low voltage lighting transformer is found under the metallic caps of the lighting tube. Remove them from the lighting tube. Your fluorescent tube may have up to 2 low voltage lighting transformers. Each transformer will be connected to the lighting tube with 2 to 4 wires. Use the wire cutter and cut the wires where they terminate on the transformer and then you can remove it.

Step 2 - Purchase a Transformer

Each light you have can have a different type of transformer and it's important that you get the right transformer for the light. Take the one you removed to the electronics, hardware or home store. Use the old one to compare to the others you can purchase and match all of the ratings. If you do not do this it will not work with the light and can cause more damage.

Step 3 - Replace the Low Voltage Lighting Transformer

Before you work with any electronics you should always read the instructions that came with the new part. The instructions will let you know about any specific needs of the transformer. Read through them at least two times until you understand how to install the new transformer. Strip the ends of the wires inside the tube and twist each of the wires into a tight bundle. Attach the wires to the correct positions on the low voltage lighting transformer and crimp the wires in place. Slide the unit back into the lighting tube followed by the metallic caps.

Step 4 - Finishing Up

Before installing the light tube you can test that the transformer is working by using a voltage meter. The new transformer should register minor activity. If you don't have a voltage meter then simply replace the fluorescent lighting tube in its fixture. Go to the circuit breaker and turn on the power. When you get back to the light you'll be able to hear the current if the transformer was not installed correctly. You can turn on the switch to test the light.
