How to Replace a Malfunctioning Laser on a DVD Player Recorder
what you'll need
- Screwdriver
- DVD laser replacement
- Paperclip
Having trouble with the laser on your DVD player recorder can be very annoying. Not only does this prevent DVDs from working properly, but it can also affect the recording of certain DVDs, which can mean that you miss out on shows which you desperately wanted to see. The only real solution is to fix the broken laser, or replace it completely. The latter is probably the cheapest option, and rather than having to have it replaced at an electronics shop, you should consider fixing it yourself. By using a few simple household tools and following a simple step-by-step guide, you should be able to do this yourself very easily.
Step 1 - Find a Replacement Laser
You should buy a replacement laser before you start trying to remove the old one. You can find new lasers from home repair stores, or you could also try computer stores, or even Internet websites. Make sure that the laser which you choose is the same model as your DVD player recorder, or at least try to find one which is compatible. If necessary, it may be worth purchasing a new DVD drive and just removing the laser from it. Once you have the right kind of replacement laser for your DVD player recorder, you are then ready to start replacing the piece.
Step 2 - Removing the Old Laser
Ensure that your DVD player recorder is turned off. Take the plug for your DVD player out of the socket. You will then need to turn over the DVD player so that you can see the back of the machine. Locate the DVD laser part of your device, and then unscrew the back, and take any pieces out of the way. Make a note of where those pieces go, so that you can easily replace them, and then remove the laser using a paperclip. It should simply slide out of the way of the DVD if you press the paperclip into the right area.
Step 3 - Add the New Laser
Take the new laser carefully between your fingertips, and push it into the frame which the old laser has just been removed from. You may want to wear gloves, as the fewer marks you make on the lens, the better it will function when you are using it. Push the laser down into position using the edge of the paperclip. Make sure that you don't scratch the surface of the lens as you do so.
Step 4 - Restore the DVD Player Recorder
Now that the lens is in place, you can then put back all the cords and connections that were previously in the way. Take the back of the DVD player recorder, and slide it over the top of the DVD player, so that it takes all of the wires beneath itself. You can then fit the back by screwing it into place. Return the plug to the socket, and try out your new lens.
