A DVD player and recorder is an expensive piece of electronic equipment that will cost you a lot of money to replace if it is no longer under warranty. There are many things that can potentially go wrong with the DVD player recorder, from stuck trays to blown fans. Electronic devices always seem difficult to repair but some things that go wrong are easy to fix. You can easily remove dirt and grime or replace a fan or disc tray. One thing you don't prepare yourself for is replacing a power cord. The power cord on the DVD player recorder can get eaten by a pet, trapped under an entertainment center or crushed in a car door during transport. Luckily it is not hard to replace and the article that follows will show you how.
Step 1 – Inspect the Damage
Before you go through the hassle of replacing the power cord on your DVD player and recorder you should inspect the cord. You may be able to repair it without replacing it. Hold the cord up to a good light source. Look for areas on the cord where the casing has been punctured or stripped. Bend these areas to see if the wires are visible and, if so, if you can see copper. If the wires inside the cable are not completely severed then try patching the area with electrical tape. If this does not work you can replace the cord.
Step 2 – Opening the DVD Player Recorder
Make sure that the unit is unplugged. Touch the metal casing to discharge any static electricity. Flip the DVD player and recorder over and locate the screws. Use the screwdriver to remove each one you can find. Some companies will hide screws under the rubber feet. These are usually glued on and are easily removed. Feet that are screwed on should be removed with the screwdriver. When all of the screws are removed place them in the plastic baggie so they do not get lost. Carefully flip the unit over and slide the top off.
Step 3 – Replace the Power Cord
In order to replace the power cord you first have to remove the old one. Generally a power cord can be installed one of three ways: solder, coax or chip. For a coax and chip power cord you merely have to pull it free from the component and then place the new power cord in its place. If you have a power cord that is soldered to the component you will have to carefully melt the solder and remove the power cord. You will then have to place the new power cord in its place by adding new solder. If you are not comfortable with soldering this may take you a few tries to get right. Once the cord is in place you can test the DVD player and recorder to make sure the cord is installed correctly. Replace the case and secure it with the screws.
