How to Replace a Refrigerator Thermometer

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Replacement Thermometer
  • Meat Thermometer
  • Glass of Water

A refrigerator thermometer installed inside a refrigerator is a useful tool that will ensure that the temperature is kept at optimum levels. Although the thermostat does have a graded dial, it does not actually show the right temperature inside; thus, it is still best to have a thermometer installed inside the fridge. When the thermometer fails to work or simply is outdated, then replace it with a new one. Replacing the old thermometer is not a very hard task to do because it only requires a few simple steps.

Step 1 – Determine the Required Replacement Thermometer

Many new refrigerator models now come with a built-in thermometer. In order to replace this type of thermometer, a replacement from the company needs to be purchased. Make sure to identify the brand and model of the fridge to get an exact replacement. Check for the availability of the thermometer in the manufacturer’s website. Sometimes it may take days before the replacement arrives, so follow the steps below for temporary temperature check.

Step 2 – Use Meat Thermometers

A meat thermometer is a good choice when checking for the temperature inside the fridge temporarily. Take a glass of water (3/4ths full) and place it inside the fridge. Make sure it sits in the middle of the shelf and not behind the door. Wait for at least four hours before placing the meat thermometer inside the glass of water. Use the reading as a guide when adjusting the thermostat. Leave the thermometer inside the fridge and check regularly.

Step 3 – Replace the Old Thermometer

When the replacement arrives, turn off the refrigerator first, remove its contents and allow it to defrost for a few minutes or hours. Determine how the built-in thermometer has been mounted inside the machine. Remove the screws if there are any. If the thermometer is glued to the walls of the fridge, carefully pull it out. Wipe the adhesive off and get ready to install the new one. Install the thermometer according to the instructions provided.

Step 4 – Install a New Thermometer

Some refrigerators do not supply replacement thermometers. Therefore, the only solution is to look for a new thermometer. Thermometers come in analog and digital models. Analog models do not require any battery and can therefore be used to save money. Digital thermometers need to have functioning batteries in order to work.

Choose a good thermometer of choice and purchase one. It is also important to note that there are different ways of installing these thermometers inside the fridge. Some come with a glued back that can be easily adhered to the walls of the fridge. Others can be placed on the shelves. Shop around for the best type of refrigerator thermometer and make sure it can be installed inside your refrigerator model.

To install the new thermometer, simply stick it to the refrigerator walls, let it sit in the middle of one of the shelves, or follow the recommended installation procedures provided by the manufacturer.
