It is necessary to learn the basic skills required to repair a washing machine clutch and other parts, such as the belt, motor or pump. A common indicator that there might be a problem with the clutch is that clothes slip inside the washing machine instead of spinning.  Here is how to replace a washing machine clutch.

Step1- Get a New Clutch

The best way to get a clutch that fits a particular washing machine is by checking the model and brand of the equipment. Take a note of the sequence of numbers or letters on the machine. These can be found where the brand name is indicated on the equipment. Use this to buy appropriate clutch from hardware stores or electronic appliance shops.

Step 2- Disconnect Electric Power

Unplug the power source. This is a safety precaution that helps avoid electric shocks. Collect the necessary tools and equipment required for the job and clear out some working space.

Step 3- Remove Washing Machine’s Hoses

These are pipes used to let water into and out of the machine. Use an empty bucket to collect water that might still be trapped in the appliance. Inspect the equipment and gently remove hoses from their connection points. If they are too tight then a pair of pliers can be used to loosen the grip.

Step 4- Locate the Bad Clutch

Using a screw driver, work your way gently towards the inside of the machine until you locate the spoil clutch. Lay each piece of the dismounted part carefully on a flat surface and avoid knocking them over or stepping on them. Place screws next to its joining part so as to make it easy when screwing the appliance back together.

The clutch is commonly found near the crankcase. Find this part in the washing machine and carefully place the equipment on its back. This allows you to easily reach the old clutch.

Step 5- Fix the New Clutch

Replace the old clutch with the new piece and carefully put back other pieces in place. Fix the crankcase and place the machine in an upright position. This makes it possible to correctly return the motor, wires, water hoses and pump.

Washing machines are constructed differently. It is therefore important to note how each piece of the machine is connected together before dismounting it to do a repair job. This makes it very easy when putting the machine back together.

Safety Tips

  • Do not repair a washing machine when it is connected to a power source. Unplug it first to avoid accidents, such as electric shocks or electrocution.
