How to Replace Baffles in Electric Dryers

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Baffles
  • Screws
  • Screwdriver

In an electric dryer, the baffle is the fin-like projection in the dryer drum. Most models have 2 to 3 baffles that assist in directing the flow of hot air during a drying cycle. Because they are constantly subjected to the dryer’s rapid spinning motion, as well as blows afflicted by clothes and any hard objects that might wind up in the dryer (like coins or shoes), baffles often become loose, dinged or even broken over time. If your electric dryer makes an annoying clanging noise and your clothes aren’t getting as dry as they used to, it’s probably time to replace the baffles. Keep reading to learn how.

Step 1 – Purchase Your Baffles

If you discover your electric dryer’s baffles are damaged or broken, note down the model number of the machine. You may be able to find replacements at the hardware store, but can also order new parts by calling the dryer’s manufacturer and providing them with the model number, or by ordering new baffles from their website.

Step 2 – Cut the Juice

Once you’ve received the replacement baffles, start by unplugging your electric dryer. This is a firm rule whenever repairing an electrical machine: be sure to shut off the power before proceeding as a safety precaution. Push the dryer away from the wall so that you have more room to work.

Step 3 – Remove the Dryer Cover

In order to unscrew the baffles from the dryer drum, you’ll need to remove the dryer cover. You may need a Phillips head screwdriver to remove any screws from the cover, depending on the model of your dryer. If you have a Maytag, on the other hand, simply use a flat head screwdriver to apply pressure to the retaining clips on the right hand corner of the cover. Once the screws or clips have been removed or released, flip the cover open.

Step 4 – Remove Old Baffles

Spin the dryer drum around until you see the screws that are keeping the old baffles in place. Using your Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws. Open the front door of the dryer to remove the baffles from the inside of the drum. Make sure that no screws are floating loose inside the dryer. Over time, the baffle screws may have loosened and fallen out. If each baffle is not affixed with at least two screws, some are missing. Spin the drum manually until you find and remove all loose screws, change and so forth.

Step 5 – Install New Baffles

Look for the spot on the drum where the old baffles had been affixed. Place your new baffle in this area and attach it to the drum wall with your screwdriver. Make sure to use new screws; the old screws may have worn down and could quickly loosen.

Step 6 – Replace Cover

Once you’ve replaced the baffles in your electric dryer, simply flip the dryer cover back in place. Replace the screws or retaining clips and plug the dryer back in.
