by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Replacement tiles
  • A-frame ladder
  • Nail gun
  • Hammer
  • Nails
  • Two crowbars
  • Tape measure
  • Replacement flashing
  • Trowel
  • Cement
  • Caulk
  • Tile adhesive
  • Safety harness

The need to replace concrete roof tiles can prompt you to call a contractor to immediately rectify it. However, by following a few steps, you will find it a task that you can undertake the project without the need for a professional.

Step 1 – Examine Roof

The first step required to replace concrete roof tiles is to determine how many you need to complete the task. If you are simply replacing a few tiles that have sustained damage, you will need to make a note of how many require replacement so that you obtain the correct number of new ones. If an entire new roof is required, it will be easier to measure the entire area and obtain sufficient tiles to cover this.

Step 2 – Remove Tiles

If possible, get someone to hold the ladder secure as you ascend it to reach the concrete roof tiles. Make sure that you are wearing shoes with soles that allow you to move about the roof safely without breaking any tiles. For additional security, wear a safety harness and anchor it to the chimney to reduce the risk of accidents. Identify the first tile that you need to remove and lift the tile above it before sliding the tip of a crowbar beneath it to hold it up. Do the same with the tile to the left of the one to be removed. Depending on how the tile has been secured, make sure you give yourself enough space to reach the edge that has been fixed to the surface. If nails have been used to attach the tile to the roof felt, lift the tile to see if the nail come with it or use the claw of a hammer to remove them. If a roof adhesive has been used to attach the tiles, apply a small amount of solvent to the underside of the tile with a paintbrush to loosen the glue and pry the tile away. Continue in this manner until you have removed all of the necessary tiles.

Step 3 – Replace Subsidiary Items

Once the concrete roof tiles have been removed, you will be in a position to examine the underlay and flashing to determine whether they also need to be replaced. If so, do this before proceeding with the tiles. Flashing is necessary around openings such as the chimney or vents as well as caulking to prevent any water ingress.

Step 4 – Fit New Tiles

Leave the crowbars in place to enable you to fit the new tiles. Use the same method to install the new concrete roof tiles that have been used for the rest of the roof. The manner in which the tiles are secured will usually depend on the location and climate. If using adhesive, apply some to the inner underside edge of the tile before slotting it into place. Alternatively, use a nail gun to fix it in place.
