- Replacement door handle
If you have a serious problem with the interior door handles of your car, then one option is simply to replace them with new ones. Replacing the interior door handles on your car involves removing the old ones from the door, and then putting in a new set. This is not very difficult, and as long as you can manage to complete this task to your own satisfaction, you should be able to get a new door handle very quickly.
Step 1 - Remove the Old Door Handles
You can take off the old door handle by unscrewing the bolt which is along the horizontal shaft of the handle. Using a screwdriver, you should turn this screw until you hear a popping sound, which is the noise of the handle coming out of the shaft. You should then be able to wiggle the door handle free. On the other hand, if you have a problem, you can use a wrench to pull the handle away from the door. Remove the electric wires using a wire cutter, and then repeat for the other handle.
Step 2 - Fit the new Handle
Begin the fitting by lining up the new interior door handle with the tab inside the car door which controls the alignment. This will keep the handle on securely. You should just be able to position this tab to the angle that you want, although you need to check that this is correctly positioned before you continue. It might be helpful to take a photograph of your old handles before you remove them, to ensure that you have the right angle on your door.
Step 3 - Install the new Handle
Take your new door handle, and wire it up to the electrical connections using the cut pieces of wire. Place the handle over the bolt which you unscrewed to remove the old handle. You should then push the screw into the bolt manually, and tighten it as far as you are able. Take your wrench, and tighten up the handle, keeping the main part of the handle in place using your other hand. Tighten the screw back into the door until the handle is secure.
Step 4 - Maintaining the Handle
While you are working on the replacement interior door handles, it is a good idea to ensure that the new ones are working correctly. This is done by opening the door once the handle has been installed, and checking the door latch assembly. If you have not cleaned or lubricated in this area for a while, you need to spray the assembly with brake cleaner, and then use an engine lubricant, or some grease, on the surface of the latch. Once the grease has been added, you should open and shut the door several times in a row in order to thoroughly lubricate the door. This will help to prolong the life of your handles.
