It is important to always check your boat trailer wheels before hitching your trailer to a truck. You also need to know how to replace these wheels in case they are damaged. However, it can be quite difficult to get past the bearings. Follow the steps below to effectively replace the bearings on your boat trailer wheels.
Step 1: Removing the Lug Bolts and Grease Cap
Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug bolts. Raise the boat trailer from the floor using the alligator jack. Raise the boat trailer up until the boat trailer wheels are a few inches from the ground. Once the wheel is off the ground, place a jack stand underneath it to support the boat trailer. You can then loosen the lug bolts and set them aside. You also need to remove the entire wheel. Use a screwdriver to remove the grease cap. Also take out the bearing buddies from the hub of the boat trailer wheel.
Step 2: Removing Grease Cap
With the extractor, take the cotter pins out from the axle. Then remove the wheel nuts using a ratchet and socket. After, remove the hub of the wheel from the shaft of the axle. Clean off the grease using a solvent and rag. After cleaning, install the new bearings into the hub of the wheel by using a copper or brass drift pin. Put some grease onto the new bearings. Tap the new bearing seal in and replace the boat trailer wheels.
