How to Replace the Motor in a Food Processor

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Replacement motor
  • Appliance manual
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Paper and pen

The number of uses that a food processor can be put to will make it a handy addition to any kitchen. It is possible that the motor can burn out, even if the rest of the appliance remains in good condition. Replacing the motor will often be the more economic option in the event that the processor stops working.

Step 1 – Inspection

Start by inspecting the food processor and the corresponding manual, which will provide the information needed to obtain a replacement motor. Make a note of the make and model of the appliance and use this when seeking out a suitable motor. The manual may provide full specification details as well as recommended outlets where a replacement motor can be obtained. It may also provide details of how to undertake the work to replace the motor.

Step 2 – Gather Equipment

The inspection of the food processor will put you in the best position to get all the tools and equipment that you will need. Make sure that you know which fasteners secure the casing so that you obtain the correct tools for the task. Make sure that the new motor is the correct type and size for the appliance, and that it offers the correct level of power.

Step 3 – Remove Motor

To gain access to the motor of the food processor, you must remove the cover protecting it. This can be undertaken by removing the fasteners securing it, which will require the use of a screwdriver or wrench. Carefully set the fasteners aside, ready for replacement. Once you have access, consider the motor closely, to check which wires are attached to which points. If necessary, note down the position of the wires by drawing a sketch of the recess that holds the motor. You should also make a note of the way round that it is fitted. Disconnect all the wires that attach the motor to the appliance, to enable you to withdraw it from the recess. In some cases, you will find that this can be done by untwisting them. Alternatively, use a pair of wire cutters.

Step 4 – Installation

Make any necessary preparations to the replacement motor before it is fitted into the food processor. Carefully fit the motor into position, avoiding letting it collide with the sides as this can result in damage to it. You may find that the wires attached to the motor are longer than necessary. Where this is the case, draw them out as far as possible so that you can see how long they need to be. Use a pair of wire cutters to cut them to the required length, stripping the ends with a pair of wire strippers. You will find that the colors of the wire insulation on the motor will match those within the processor. Attach the wires by twisting them together onto the correlating component and manipulating the wires so that they lay flat. If this proves difficult, use wire clips to secure them. Test the processor before reattaching the cover.
