How to Replace Trash Compactor Drawer Rollers

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Extra screws
  • Screwdriver
  • Cleaning brush
  • Oil or paraffin wax

A source of annoyance to trash compactor owners is sticking trash drawer rollers. For some years now, trash compactors have been a convenient way to compress and dispose of household trash. A trash compactor consists of a housing which encloses a drawer used for the collection of compacted trash. The modern trash compactor is designed for problem free operation over many years. This, of course, does not mean that they will never break down. One of the problems often encountered is that the drawer sometimes sticks when it is withdrawn from the housing. This problem is usually connected to an obstruction in the rollers that the drawer slides on. Clearing the obstruction will often fix the problem.

A trash compactor is normally sold as an appliance. Traditionally, for convenience, the trash compactor is located next to the kitchen sink. To dispose of any trash, a drawer would slide out holding the trash can and would slide back in again after the trash had been deposited. This drawer has a cabinet door that matches the cabinetry of the kitchen.

Step 1:  Remove the Drawer

To check the drawer rollers, first remove the drawer. If it does not simply slide all the way out, check for and release the swing latches on the roller bars that keep the drawer in place. The drawer should now be easily removed. Empty the drawer so that the drawer may be turned upside down for inspection.

Step 2: Remove the Bar with Rollers on It

Inspect the drawer rollers carefully to determine the reason they are not running smoothly. There is the possibility that waste material, dust or hair is preventing the rollers from operating correctly. The rollers may be removed for closer inspection by undoing the screws holding them in place. Remove any foreign matter with a stiff bristled cleaning brush and apply some light oil or paraffin wax to reduce friction and to allow the rollers to run smoothly again. Replace the rollers and tighten the retaining screws, making sure not to over tighten them. Replace the drawer back into the trash compactor.

Step 3: Replace Bars and Rollers

After replacing the drawer, check the operation of the rollers by pulling the drawer out and pushing it back in again a few times. If there is still a problem with the rollers, they should be replaced with a new set. Make sure that you write down any applicable part numbers and take accurate measurements of the existing roller bars in order to obtain the exact replacement parts. Many appliance companies make different models of their appliances using similar parts. Well known appliances and parts may be purchased from retail stores or from large hardware outlets. With the introduction of the Internet and online shopping it is also possible and very convenient to order replacement parts by mail order. Once the replacement parts have been received, they may be fitted carefully and another check made to see that the drawer is opening smoothly.
