How to Replace Washing Machine Agitator Dogs

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Replacement washing machine agitator dogs

If you're having problems with your washing machine or it's making a strange clicking sound, it may be time to replace your washing machine agitator dogs. The agitator dogs are cogs in the washing machine in between the two pieces of a washing machine agitator. When these need to re replaced there are a few simple steps.

Step 1: Remove the Agitator Caps

You can use a screwdriver to pull off the washing machine agitator cap. Many washing machine models will also have an inner cap to remove as well. These caps can merely be pulled out of place.

Underneath the washing machine agitator cap(s) is a center bolt. Unscrew the bolt with a wrench and remove it. This allows access to the washing machine agitator itself.

Step 2: Remove Agitator

In some models you will need to reach underneath the washing machine agitator and lift the whole thing out of the washing machine. In that case, you will then need to separate the top half of the washing machine agitator from the bottom half. Otherwise, you can just remove the top half.

Step 3: Replace the Dogs

Once the top half of the washing machine agitator has been removed, you can remove the dogs and replace them. Once these have been replaced, reverse the steps to return the agitator to the washing machine.
