How to Replace Your Sledgehammer Handle

A sledgehammer is a sturdy and powerful tool. But even if the sturdy metal head can handle all that impact, the wooden handle may wear away over time. Fortunately, replacing your handle is hardly a hassle, and if you follow these simple steps, you will be swinging again before you know it.

Step 1: Take Apart and Clean

Remove head from damaged handle, then clean head thoroughly with soap and water.  This will help it adhere to the new handle.

Step 2: Insert Replacement Handle

Insert the skinnier end of the replacement handle into the head's eyehole. Strike the base of the handle until it pokes out of the other end of the head.

Step 3: Caulk the Opening

Insert caulking cord around the bottom opening on the head to plug it up.

Step 4: Mix Epoxy and Insert

Mix epoxy according to manufacturer instructions. When the epoxy is ready, pour into opening at the top of the hammer. Take care that the opening is filled without overflowing.

Step 5: Store and Dry

Store hammer in a cool dry place. Allow at least five days to draw before use.

Step 6: Test Your Hammer

Give your hammer a few good swings on a tire or other safe object. It should now be good for many years to come!
