How to Reset a Digital Converter Box

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Pliers
  • Flashlight

Occasionally, your digital converter box will stop working correctly because of a power outage, weather or a power surge. You can easily reset it within a few minutes with these simple steps.

Step 1 - Unplug

Turn off the television and unplug your converter box. If it is very tight, gently loosen with pliers. If your connection is in a dark area, use a flashlight to see that you are unplugging the correct cable. Leave the converter box unplugged for approximately 15 seconds and plug it back in.

Step 2 - Cycling

The box should be resetting itself at this point. Turn your television back on. You will see patterned lines on the screen as it resets. This can take a little time, so be patient. Allow it several minutes to complete the cycle. After it completes the cycle you will need to check to be sure everything is working.

Step 3 - Check

To check that everything is restored, run through the channels to be sure all of your programming is working. If you have a channel guide, check this too. At times, this takes longer to come up, so do give it up to 1/2 hour to reset. Next, check your programmable display information, such as the time. Most times this needs to be input again after a reset.
