How to Save Money on an Soffit Vent Installation

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Ladder
  • Drill
  • Cardboard
  • Nail
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • Wood glue

A soffit vent is an important installation in your attic ventilation. This type of venting will make your home cooler, which in turn will enable you to save money when it comes to air conditioning expenses. It will also enable you to use your attic space for more effective storage or even as a living space. Before starting with your installation project, bear in mind that your objective is to save money from your soffit vent installation.

Step 1 – Fabricate Your Own Soffit Vent

There are ready-made vents in the market, but you can save money by making your own. You may use unused plywood sheets or other materials you have around the house.

Step 2 – Measure the Material

All you need to do is to decide the desired measurement of the vent, and have it traced on the material that you will use. Cut out the vent, and once again determine the area where you will cut the pieces out to make the vent.

Step 3 – Saw the Parts and Glue Them

Saw the area where the air will make a pass. You can now cut out the piece of material to 1 inch wide and at a length that will match vertical lines on the vent hole. Then, glue the pieces of lines at the center of the vent covering all the vacant area of sliced wooden strips facing outwards. After it is dry, your homemade vent is ready for installation.

Step 4 – Get On the Roof

Identify the area on the roof where you will have the installation of your soffit vents. You may also want to verify your attic relative to the soffit vents installation. To make your reference identifiable, mark the area where the soffit vent is to be installed and drill on the mark.

Step 5 – Model Creation for Installation

Create a model of your soffit vent using a cardboard. The hole should be at the center. The model should be smaller compared to the precise cut of the soffit vents’ dimensions.

Step 6 – Working On the Roof

Have a ladder in place below the roof edges, and be sure to wear your protective glasses. Place the model at the center just over the intended hole created earlier from the inside of the attic. Trace the model around, and use your saw to cut the outline that you have traced.

Step 7 – Installing the Vent

Have the vent in place on the opening. It will be good to have them screwed in place. Alternatively, if the ceiling where you are installing the vent is made of wood, you can use wood cement to make your installation more efficient.
