How to Select a Ground Covering for Pet Bird Cages

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Newspaper
  • Birdie Bloomer

There is no doubt that pet bird cages can get incredibly messy. Not just inside the cage but the surrounding floor area too. Bits of seed, feather and all sorts of debris will fly out of the cage at one time or another. For this, there is the covering for the cage floor. Many people go to their local pet store and take the advice of the store clerk who tells them they need this item and that item and ker-ching! You have spent a couple of hundred unnecessary dollars.

Step 1 – Choosing a Ground Cover

There are sand paper type covers and plastic washable covers which will probably cost you money. These are a waste because they don’t last very long and they will not protect against bacteria. The simple solution and the cheapest solution is to go for something which will absorb the waste and protect against bacteria.

Step 2 – What to Choose

Simple, old fashioned newspaper, is the answer. That will cost you nothing compared to other products, and it contains chemical products in the ink which will fight against bacteria build up. Newspaper is very absorbent and will last a good week between cleans.

Step 3 – Birdie Bloomers

Attach a birdie bloomer to the lower portion of the cage. This act as seed collectors to prevent seeds landing on your own floor.
