How to Set Up a WiFi Adapter

by DoItYourself Staff

No one likes to be stuck at the computer desk and by installing a WiFi adapter you do not have to be chained to the desk all day. You do not have to be a technical guru in order to set up a WiFi connection for your computer, but there are a few things you need to know in order to set up the computer with WiFi. Newer portable computers usually already have wireless adapters built in. Older laptops and desktop computers will need to have an adapter added in order to access the Internet wirelessly. When preparing your computer for wireless connectivity, there are a few types of adapters. Installation process also differs for each kind of WiFi adapter.

Step 1: USB Adapters

USB adapters are good for computers that have a USB port. These adapters are easy to install. Insert the software CD and follow the onscreen instructions. Plug the USB adapter stick into an empty USB slot. The computer will automatically install the hardware, and you are ready to connect to the Internet.

Step 2: Card Slot Adapters

Another choice for wireless adapters is a Card Bus or CF adapter. These are a good choice for laptops that do not have a built in wireless adapter. This type of adapter will only work with a device that has a card reader or card slot. To install the adapter, first insert and install the software on the computer; next insert the adapter into the card slot. The computer will install the hardware.

Step 3: Adapters for the Desktop

The last type of adapter is the internal adapter. Do not be intimidated, this adapter can be installed without a technician. However, you cannot use this adapter if the desktop computer does not have an available slot. If you have software, install it before installing the hardware. Next, turn the computer off. Disconnect all cables and lay it on its side on a flat sturdy surface. Open the case using a small screwdriver, if necessary. Locate a slot that the adapter can fit in. Remove the antenna from the adapter. Carefully place it in the slot. Replace the covering and reconnect the cables. Turn the computer back on, and you are finished.

Step 4: Other Adapters

After an adapter is correctly installed, you may need to set up the wireless network and router before you can begin using the Internet. With the advance in game system technology, you can use a wireless game adapter to connect your Xbox or other Internet accessible game system. Installing these adapters is similar to the instructions for other wireless adapters. These adapters are not just for games. If your computer has a wired connection, this adapter is an option.

Step 5: Configure the Adapter

Once your adapter is installed, go to "Control Panel" of the computer by clicking the "Start" button. Next, right click the "Network Connections" icon and go to, "Properties." Now go to the "Wireless Network" section and select the check box for, "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings." Now, click, "Add," in the "Preferred Networks sections," and input the SSID key. Once done, also input the WPA key (check with your service provider if you don't know the key) Click "Ok" and your project is finished.
