How to Set Up Decorative Gable Vents for Your Home

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Gable Vents
  • Sawz All
  • Ladder
  • Flashing
  • Nails
  • Hammer

Decorative gable vents are used by many people to add a little bit of character to their attic ventilation. A decorative gable vent can take the shape of many different things, but are mostly seen in wrought iron shapes and swirls. Setting up decorative gable vents is an easy process and does not require a lot of time.

Step 1: Cut Hole in Gable

Measure the dimensions of the gable vent and cut the hole with the Sawz All tool.

Step 2: Place Flashing around Hole

Place a small bead of caulking around the hole you just cut out and bend some aluminum flashing all around the hole. Leave a 1/4 inch strip on the inside of the cut with 1/2 inch on the outside.

Step 3: Place Decorative Gable Vents in Hole

Once you have the preparation completed, you can set the decorative gable vents into the hole. Position them square into the hole and check with a level.

Step 4: Attach Securely to Gable

After the vents have been placed in the hole on the gable, you can secure it with nails. Use galvanized nails and hammer them straight into the wood. Try not to bend them over. This will puncture the decorative gable vent and scratch it or break it.
