How to Set Up VoIP Phone Service on Skype

by DoItYourself Staff

You can set up VoIP phone service through a variety of providers. VoIP technology saves individuals a great deal of money for long-distance or international phone calls.

Skype has become a popular VoIP phone service, used by a growing number of people. Using Skype is simple. Here’s what you need to do to setup your Skype VoIP phone service.

Getting Your Computer Ready for Installation

Whenever you install new software, you should close all word processor documents, spreadsheets or other programs before you download and run the new software program. Make sure you save your changes to all your documents as needed.

Downloading the Correct Software

You can download Skype software directly from the company's website. When you get to the website, click on "Get Skype Now." Your download window will open. The application will prompt you and ask whether you want to save the file or run it. Always save it to a place that you remember. The easiest place is either in the documents folder or right on your desktop.

Installing the Skype Software

After you have completely downloaded the Skype software, find the file on your desktop or in your documents folder. Double click on the executable file. (It will end in .exe.) Read through the warning information. Select "Next" or "OK." Select the language you wish to install with.

Reviewing Licensing Agreements and Other Policies

Review the Skype licensing agreement. Scroll all the way to the bottom and check the box that says, "I accept the agreement." Click on the "Next" button. Your Skype installation will begin.

At this point, the program should ask you how you wish Skype to operate. If you want Skype to start every time you launch your computer, select that option. Click "Finish" to start using Skype VoIP phone service.

Enhancing Your Skype Experience through Computer Accessories

If you wish to use headphones, plug them into your USB port. Test your headphone volume (both for the earpiece and for the microphone). If you do not have this accessory already, you can purchase it at any local electronics store or online with Skype.

If you will use a microphone, plug it into the USB port. Check that is it operational. If you do not have a USB port available, you might also be able to plug these accessories into the green port on the back of your computer.

Make sure you do not hear too much echoing. Use the Skype facility to easily test your sound capabilities.

Locating Your Friends

Search for your friends by Skype ID or by their email addresses. Add them as your Skype contacts. On the bottom right of your task bar, enable your status. You can tell your friends you are available. Or if you are unavailable, you can become invisible.
