How to Stain a Wooden Rocking Chair

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Paintbrush
  • Sponge
  • Nonabrasive washcloth
  • Warm water
  • Small tarp
  • Expendable towel or blanket
  • Protective gloves
  • Safety goggles
  • Paper breathing mask

If you're looking for a great way to add color to a wooden rocking chair, you should consider adding a fresh coat of stain. Applying stain is a simple, effective way of breathing new life into your wooden furniture.

Step 1 - Prep Your Chair

Before proceeding to stain your wooden rocking chair, you'll need to make a few preparations. Begin by using a lightly dampened sponge or nonabrasive washcloth to thoroughly wipe down the chair and remove any caked-on dirt or dust. Next, set the chair on top of a small tarp or an expendable towel or blanket. Lastly, protect yourself by donning paper breathing mask, safety gloves and a pair of safety goggles.

Step 2 - Select a Suitable Stain

Make sure to select the proper type of stain for the chair with which you're working. If your chair primarily functions as outdoor furniture, go with a protective microporous stain, as this type of stain is very resilient against UV rays. Alternatively, if you intend to store the chair indoors, an oil-based or water-based stain should suit your needs perfectly.

Step 3 - Apply Your Stain

Having selected a suitable stain, use a paintbrush to apply it to your chair in smooth, even strokes. When painting a wooden rocking chair, make sure to start from the bottom and gradually work your way up. If you intend to apply an additional coat of stain, make sure to wait until your initial coat has fully dried before proceeding to do so.
