How to Sterilize and Keep Your Digital Ear Thermometer Clean
what you'll need
- Digital ear thermometer
- Hot soapy water
- Cloth
- Antiseptic solution of choice
- Disposable probe covers
It is important to keep digital ear thermometers clean in order to ensure an accurate reading, and sterilization is also always imperative for health purposes. Digital ear thermometers are considered to be safer than traditional mercury thermometers, as they do not contain any mercury, a toxic substance. Average digital thermometers are not designed or recommended for the ears. Only a tympanic thermometer is suitable for measuring temperature through the ears.
Step 1: Removing Wax
Use very hot soapy water to remove any wax or dirt from the probe. Wring a cloth out as dry as possible before wiping. Dry well before sterilizing.
Step 2: Sterilization
Alcohol wipes are available from pharmacies and some supermarkets. Thermometers can also be dipped in cetavlon (an antiseptic), diluted iodine, peroxide, or pure alcohol. After cleaning the probe with hot soapy water, dry and then wipe with a sterilized pad or dip in preferred solution then dry. Use the sterilized pad or solution over the entire thermometer. If using iodine, be aware of the possibility of staining.
Step 3: Disposable Probe Covers
Disposable probe covers can be purchased in bulk. They are meant to be used once only. Even when using disposable probe covers, thermometers should still be regularly sterilized.
