How to Store Home Made Wine

by DoItYourself Staff

How you keep home made wine is just as important as the way you make it. Keeping it in the correct conditions will ensure a good life to the home made wine you’ve created.

Temperature

The home made wine needs to be kept somewhere cool. For most wine the option temperature for storage is 55 degrees Fahrenheit. This will reduce the effect of oxidation on the wine. Where possible, the temperatures in the place where you keep your home made wine shouldn’t fluctuate much. It’s advisable to create a good, cool place while the wine is fermenting so it’s ready in advance. Keep a thermometer in the storage area and check it regularly to ensure the temperature remains steady.

Sunlight

Store the home made wine away from direct sunlight. The lack of sun prevents the wine producing more oxygen, which could alter the taste.

Position

The home made wine needs to be stored on its side. This prevents the cork from drying out. For this you do need to use wine racks, either purchased or made, that leave the bottles of home made wine sloping slightly downward to let the wine keep the cork moist.
