How to Tape and Mud Sheetrock

  • Self-adhesive mesh drywall tape
  • Putty knife (large blade)
  • Joint compound (spackle)
  • Drywall trowel
  • Sandpaper (use a drywall sander for this job)

Taping and mudding sheetrock, whether you are repairing a piece of drywall or putting sheetrock in an entire room, involves some technique in order to properly cover any seams and breaks between the drywall. It is not a terribly difficult task to accomplish but does require some patience and practice in order to successfully apply the tape and mud to the sheetrock. In order to successfully tape and mud your sheetrock wall, the following are some tips, along with the tools and materials needed to accomplish this task.

Step 1 - Purchase Drywall Supplies

Go to a local home improvement center or hardware store in order to pick up drywall tape, joint compound, knives and trowel to hold the joint compound. Drywall tape can be paper or a self-adhesive mesh, which is easier to apply. Many do-it-yourselfers purchase the self-adhesive mesh tape as opposed to the paper drywall tape. The paper is for professional drywall contractors and takes longer to develop comfort with if you have never taped and mudded sheetrock.

Step 2 - Prepare Trowel
