How to Tell If Your Basement Drain Tile Is Clogged

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Stick
  • Flashlight

If you have the system of pipes fitted around your foundations known as a drain tile, then you may be concerned about them becoming clogged. These tiles are usually used to move water away from your sump pit, so if they become blocked or clogged, then you may find that your crawl space or basement becomes flooded. The best way to resolve this is to regularly check your drain tile space.

Step 1 - Check the Sump Pit

Examine the area which the drain tile is carrying water from. You can usually find your sump put in the basement or crawl space of your home. Look to ensure that your pit is fully drained. If you can see the water hanging about in your pit, particularly after heavy rain, then your drain tile could be blocked. Look around your basement, and check the walls for damp. Check where the basement connects to the foundations, and look for cracks.

Step 2 - Check the Drain Tile Outlet

You should check the drain tile outlet after rains. After a heavy rain, water should be pouring out of the drain tile. Use your stick to examine the edge of the outlet, and then wait for the water to stop flowing, before checking the pipes using a flashlight.
