How to Tell if Your Closet Light Has Electrical Problems

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Voltmeter
  • Light Bulb

An electrical fault with your closet light is a serious problem that could cause you a lot of trouble. A small electrical fault in this area can escalate into a house fire, or can cause electrical damage to other items in your home. If you are worried that your closet light is developing a problem, then there are some simple tests that you can perform.

Step 1 - Check the Lighting

The first step in telling if your closet light has electrical problems is by turning it on. With the closet door open, turn the light on. The closet light should turn on immediately. If it does not, this suggests that there is a problem with the current. You should also take the time to notice other things, such as blinking or flickering lights. The light bulb may also be too hot to handle.

Step 2 - Check the Electrical Circuit

Examine the electrical circuit by using a voltmeter. Pass it over the edge of your closet light fixtures, and then pass it back over to the light switch. Look for any significant changes. You may also like to change the light bulb, and try the experiment again, to see if there is any differences in the electrical current.
