How to Test a Chest Freezer Thermostat

by DoItYourself Staff

If you suspect your chest freezer thermostat may not be working properly, there are several ways to test it. Before you start, determine how bad the problem is. Is your freezer not freezing, even on the highest setting? Or is it frosting over on the lowest setting? These could be problems with the compressor, the evaporator or any number or other components of your freezer. Follow the easy steps below to test your thermostat.

Step 1 – Measure Your Settings

Put a digital thermometer in your freezer and check its temperature at each setting. This will tell you if it is syncing up with what the freezer is supposed to do. If the temperature remains the same at each setting, or if it is too low or high, than you know the thermostat is not working properly.

Step 2 – Defrost and Start Over

Take everything out of your freezer and defrost. Do this every few months to prevent ice from building up.

Unlike modern freezer and refrigerator units, chest freezers do not automatically defrost, and this can cause temperature variations. Once you’ve defrosted, repeat Step 1. If adjusting the thermostat does not change the temperature like it should, you may need to replace the thermostat system or call in a professional to determine the exact problem.
