How to Test a Refrigerator Evaporator Fan

by DoItYourself Staff

A defect in the refrigerator evaporator fan may be one of the reasons behind your refrigerator’s inefficient cooling system. After testing the thermostat and checking for obstructions in your freezer, check the evaporator fan. The fan is usually located behind the freezer. It is important to turn off the whole unit and remove the stored food items in the freezer before inspecting and testing the fan.

Checking for Corrosion

Use a small screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the fan box in place in order to have access to the fan’s wiring system. Most fans are connected by three wires. Before disconnecting them, label them properly so you are not get confused once you need to put them back into place. Pull off the connector, not the wire, from the terminal. Inspect the terminals and connectors for corrosion. You need to replace the connectors if you find that they are no longer in good condition.

Checking the Motor and Multi-tester

The fan blade’s movement should be smooth and free. The motor needs replacement if the fan does not move freely.

Then, set the multi-tester to Ohms X1. Attach the probes to both terminals. You should get a reading of 0 Ohms. If you have a different reading, the entire evaporator fan should be replaced.
