How to Test a Washing Machine Motor

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Screwdriver
  • Wrench
  • Pliers

If your washing machine motor is acting up, then it is often cheaper to take it out and replace it, rather than testing it to see if it can be made to work. If you want to test your washing machine motor, then the best thing that you can do is to operate your washing machine without any washing inside, and see how the motor performs.

Step 1 - Remove the Motor

Take the motor out of your washing machine. Make sure that both electricity and water supplies are turned off at the mains before you proceed. Open up the panel at the back using your screwdriver, and then remove the electrical connections from around your motor. Use the wrench to extract the motor if there are any problems with removing it.

Step 2 - Clean and Replace

Give your motor a clean by removing any dirt or hair which has become stuck around the motor. You should then return your motor to the washing machine, turn on the electricity and water, and run a washing cycle. Listen to the actions of the motor, and pay attention to any odd noises during the cycle.
