How to Test a Washing Machine Transmission

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Washing machine

A washing machine transmission should be tested if you suspect that it is the source of a problem with the proper operation of your washer machine. The transmission is a part of the washing machine that is typically located in the bottom, near the water pump and motor assembly. The purpose for the transmission within the washing machine is that same as the purpose for the transmission within your car. It controls the speed and changes to the cycles when the washing machine is in operation.

Step 1 - Listen for Changes in Sound

You can test the washing machine transmission by turning the washing machine on and listening for any changes in the transmission motor when you change the cycle settings on the washing machine. You should be listening for any unusual sounds or changes in the speed of the washing machine that may indicate that it is not working correctly, especially if the washing machine sounds as if it is cycling too fast or too slow (i.e. going from rinse to agitator, etc.).

Step 2 - Conduct a Visible Inspection of the Transmission

You may also want to look inside the washing machine in order to visually inspect the washing machine for any signs of visible wear or tear that may be detected by the eye, indicating that the washing machine transmission may be in need of servicing or replacement.
