How to Use a Wire Nut

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Wire Nut
  • Wire Cutters
  • Wire

If you are going to be working with wires, a properly placed wire nut can save you a lot of work. The following instructions should help you keep your wires organized and secure without any trouble.

Step 1 - Getting Ready

Before you begin, you will need to match your particular wires to an appropriate wire nut. Each wire nut that you might buy is designed for use with a specific size of wire. Before you buy a wire nut, you should take note of the wire you will be using it on and make sure you purchase the right size.

For this reason, wire nuts are color coded, so once you are familiar with them, they should be easy to organize.

Step 2 - Preparing the Wires

Strip 1/4 to 3/8 inches of the ends of the wires.

Step 3 - Connecting the Wires

Insert the two wires into the wire nut. Twist the wire nut until there is no loose wire and you cannot do so further.

Step 4 - Finishing Up

Test the wire nut by pulling on the wire. It should be secure and not wobble or shake. If the connection is not as secure as you might like, you may need to tighten it further or even start over.
