How to Use a Wood Fireplace Blower

by DoItYourself Staff

A wood fireplace blower is a device designed to spread out the heat from the fireplace through all rooms of the house. In doing so, it optimizes the fireplace’s heating capacity and helps to save energy.

How It Works

Fireplace blowers are placed in front of the fireplace opening. Some models are designed so that they can be attached to the fireplace doors. The fireplace doors help to keep the heat inside the fireplace. The warm air flows into the blower. Inside, a small electric motor circulates the air around the room. If it is installed in conjunction with the fireplace door, it can spread the heat further, potentially filling the entire house.

Installing a Fireplace Blower

Before installing a fireplace blower, make sure that an electric outlet is located nearby. If there is none, use an extension cord. Be sure that the cord is secured so that no one would trip over it. Another important consideration is size. If the fireplace has a hearth, the blower must be able to fit atop of it – if not, it must have enough room in front of the fireplace. For some models, it is also important to know the depth of the fireplace itself. Finally, not all fireplace blowers can function in a wood-burning fireplace – some are designed for gas-burning and electric-powered fireplaces.

Different models have different installation procedures. For more information, consult a professional or look up the installation information using the blower’s model number as a reference.
